Weather impacting local Labor Day weekend events

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — City officials and event organizers are closely watching the track of Hermine, which is now a hurricane. The storm will likely bring heavy rain, flooding, and strong winds to Hampton Roads.

Here is a list of changes to local events because of the tropical system.

HAMPTON

City of Hampton libraries and community centers will be closed Saturday, September 3.

NORFOLK

Downtown Norfolk Council has announced that First Fridays on Granby Street scheduled for Friday night has been cancelled:

Unfortunately due to predicted high winds and rain this evening as well as the DNC and City of Norfolk staff duties required to prepare Downtown for the impending storm, we are cancelling tonight’s First Friday event.
The safety of our staff and the public is our top priority.

The Labor Day Classic football game between NSU and Elizabeth City State had been postponed and moved to 6 p.m. on Sunday. ODU’s game against Hampton University is now set for 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Click here for the full story.

The Old Dominion women’s soccer team’s game against East Carolina originally scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 4 at 6:00 p.m. has now been pushed back two and half hours to 8:30 p.m.

The city of Norfolk has announced that all libraries, the Virginia Zoo, all recreation centers, the Nauticus and the MacArthur Memorial will be closed on Saturday.

Portsmouth

The Marcolivia concert scheduled for Saturday at the Portsmouth Public Library has been postponed to Nov. 12 at 1 p.m.

The Portsmouth Olde Towne Farmers’ Market has been canceled Saturday.

Suffolk

Suffolk Tourism has cancelled the following events:

  • Saturday, September 3 – Suffolk Farmers’ Market – First Saturday at the Market, Suffolk Visitor Center Pavilion, 524 North Main Street
  • Saturday, September 3 – Great Dismal Swamp Safari, to have departed from the Suffolk Visitor Center at 9:30 a.m.

As of now, the Great Dismal Swamp Safari is as originally scheduled. This tour departs from the Suffolk Visitor Center, located at 524 North Main Street at 9:30 a.m. and will return at 1:30 p.m.

VIRGINIA BEACH

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Bruce Springsteen’s concert at the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater has been moved from Saturday night to Monday, Sept. 5 due to inclement weather from Tropical Storm Hermine.

Officials say those looking to go to the show should hold on to their tickets from the Saturday show. Those tickets will be honored on Monday.

The American Music Festival (AMF) 5th Street Main Stage concert featuring 311, Ozomatli and RDGLDGRN scheduled for tonight, Friday, Sept. 2, is cancelled.

Free performances by Chris Janson and Kevin MaC will occur tonight, weather permitting, on the 24th Street Stage. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and show is 7:30.

Free performances by Little River Band and Eli Cook will occur tonight, weather permitting, on the 31st Street Stage. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show begins at 7 p.m.

All other AMF shows today are cancelled.

Saturday Concert Update:
AMF’s Saturday concert headlined by UB40, The Wallflowers and Cracker will be held in the Virginia Beach Convention Center, 1000 19th Street at the resort. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. All other Saturday shows are cancelled.

Sunday Concert Update:
AMF’s Sunday 5th Street Main Stage concert featuring Culture Club, The Romantics and Groves has been moved into Virginia Beach Convention Center, 1000 19th Street at the resort. Doors open Sunday at 5 p.m., and the show begins at 6:30.
Sunday’s scheduled free concerts will be determined Saturday.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon
Saturday’s Mile on the Sand race is cancelled. Sunday’s races are still on, for now. Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon President Josh Furlow released this statement

Runner safety is our top priority. In consultation with the City of Virginia Beach, the Virginia Beach Police Department, the City of Virginia Beach Emergency Planner and the National Weather Service, we have determined the extreme weather conditions are not suitable to provide a safe race experience and safe preparations for those responsible for the necessary setup. We share in your disappointment at the cancellation of this year’s distance and will be refunding your entry fee.”
