Inmate dies at Hampton Roads Regional Jail

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Officials with the Hampton Roads Regional Jail say an inmate died on August 6.

The inmate was identified as 60-year-old Henry Stewart.

A woman claiming to be Stewart’s sister says he was in jail for a parole violation. He had previously faced charges for shoplifting in Hampton and Newport News.

In a news release sent Sept. 1, officials said the jail receives inmates that typically “have acute or chronic medical issues or significant behavioral problems.”

“lnmates are transferred here because they have pre-existing medical and mental health issues with little or no treatment prior to incarceration,” the release said.

Jail officials said any death at HRRJ is investigated by the Portsmouth Police Department and the Medical Examiner’s Office. Investigators speak with other inmates and review medical records.

Jail officials say the Medical Examiner’s Office is working to complete an autopsy to determine Stewart’s cause of death.
