Father, son found dead inside mobile home in double homicide

MURFREESBORO, N.C. (WAVY) — A double homicide investigation is underway in Hertford County after deputies found a father and his son dead inside their mobile home early Thursday morning.

Sheriff Juan Vaughan says neighbors called at 2:11 a.m. saying they heard a scuffle outside a home on Pinetop Circle in the Woodridge Mobile Home Park. Deputies responded and found the two dead from gunshot wounds.

The sheriff identified the victims as 34-year-old Michael Lassiter and 59-year-old James Beale. Both victims lived at the residence.

Family and close friends spent Thursday comforting each other, reminiscing on the good times and thinking about who could have committed the crime.

“It’s probably somebody [Lassiter] trusted or somebody he knew really good. That’s what makes it even worse,” said Tim Lassiter, who identified himself as a close friend.

Loved ones say Lassiter leaves behind seven young children. Beale was a father of four, they say.

Vaughan says his investigators conducted several interviews Thursday. So far, no suspects have been developed.

“We don’t know if it was one person or two or three,” Vaughan said. “We are going to work it, and we are going to come up with something.”
