CHARLOTTESVILLE (WAVY) – Kurt Benkert missed Spring practice, and has only been at the University of Virginia for four months since transferring from East Carolina University. Apparently, that was long enough to impress the coaching staff, who named Benkert the starting quarterback on Wednesday.
Benkert, a 6-foot-4, 235-pound junior, has displayed a strong arm, considerable mobility, and as Bronco Mendenhall described, “a good decision-maker with a very strong arm and he has a natural leadership skills.”
Benkert beat out two others- incumbent starter Matt Johns and Arizona transfer Connor Brewer- for the job. Johns started every game for former head coach Mike London last season and threw for more than 2,800 yards.
