PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The second lane of the Midtown Tunnel US 58 West has officially opened for traffic.
Officials with Elizabeth River Tunnels confirmed that the tunnel opened around 12:30 p.m. Friday.
This construction milestone marks the first time motorists can travel in both lanes of the new westbound Midtown Tunnel.
Motorists using the Brambleton Avenue ramp to access the Midtown Tunnel West will now feed directly into the right lane toward the new tunnel with no merging required.
Traffic traveling south on Hampton Boulevard, heading for the Midtown Tunnel West will flow directly into the left lane of the new tunnel.
The Midtown Tunnel East will remain a single lane from Portsmouth to Norfolk while the tunnel undergoes rehabilitation.
