NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Police have charged 38-year-old Catalina Estrada with concealing a dead body, even though they apparently haven’t found a body.

The investigation began Sunday, August 21. Officers were called to the Key West Inn on Jefferson Avenue around 5 a.m. for a woman who had possibly overdosed, but they didn’t find her. The following night, a missing person’s report was filed for 51-year-old Michelle Ann Garner of Hampton, who was last seen at the Key West Inn.

Garner’s daughter told police that she believes the hotel is where her mother was last seen. An employee at the hotel told 10 On Your Side that he believes Garner checked into the hotel on Saturday August 13, more than a week before her daughter reported her missing.

The employee also told 10 On Your Side, and investigators, that Garner was in the company of Estrada. Police confirm that they questioned Estrada Tuesday as part of their missing persons investigation.

As a result of that interview, investigators concluded that Garner is now dead.

Police included in their news release that they received a call for an overdose at the key west inn Saturday, one day before they started investigating. They say they didn’t find anyone in distress, who made the call or if it had any ties to Garner.

The search for Garner resulted in the arrest of Estrada. She is charged with concealment of a dead body, which is a felony, but police say they still have not found Garner.

10 On Your Side reached out Estrada to see if she could fill in some of the blanks, including where Garner’s body is located. She declined our interview request from jail.

Estrada is in custody at the Newport News City Jail.
