FRANKLIN, Va. (WAVY) – Derrick Thompson has a heart for service. He saw children and families in his area who are in need and wanted to do what he could to help.
A few months ago, he set up the Derrick Thompson Foundation. Over the weekend, he held his first event; a school supply giveaway. Derrick hung up flyers to advertise and on Saturday, he and a small group of volunteers set up a couple of tables off of Armory Drive in Franklin and loaded them up with things like notebooks, folders, pens, pencils, crayons, scissors and more.
Derrick grilled up some eats, they passed out food, handed out t-shirts, Mickey and Minnie even showed up. Three hours and more than 100 kids later, the Derrick Thompson Foundation inaugural event was a huge success. Here’s the kicker-Derrick paid for all of this himself. He picked up every school supply, bought the food, cooked it and handed it out with every penny coming from his own pocket. Derrick is hoping to grow his foundation and garner sponsors for future events. He plans to hold holiday drives this fall and winter for food and toys and would, eventually, like to set up a scholarship fund.
