Back-to-school immunizations offered in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Health officials are offering back-to-school immunizations today in Newport News.

The immunizations are being offered at the Peninsula Health Center off J. Clyde Morris Boulevard.

In addition, health officials are offering blood pressure screenings, car seat registration, emergency preparedness tips and Zika information.

Karen Gangitano is a nurse with the health department. She says getting your child vaccinated is the most important thing you can do before the start of the school year.

“It’s really sad because the little Kindergartners are dressed up in their brand new outfits and their little backpacks and they are so excited but they can’t go to school and the parents get called to come pick them up,” said Gangitano. “You can prevent so many diseases with the vaccinations and it also helps other who have compromised immune systems and cannot get vaccines.”

Gangitano says unvaccinated children are at an increased risk for contracting vaccine-preventable diseases like measles, mumps and rubella.

They could also spread diseases which are serious or potentially life-threatening for high-risk individuals like infants and or people with weakened immune systems.
