Martin Thomas wins special election for ex-councilman Protogyrou’s seat

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Martin A. Thomas has won a special election for the seat of former Councilman Andy Protogyrou.

Tuesday’s special election was for Ward 1 in Norfolk, which covers West Ocean View, Willoughby Spit, Wards Corner, Titustown, Meadowbrook and Lochhaven.

Protogyrou unsuccessfully ran for the position of mayor this past spring.

He was forced to give up his seat on city council in June, after Kenny Alexander was elected by a wide margin.

According to the State of Virginia, Martin A. Thomas Jr. — an independent and local attorney — is the only candidate listed on the ballot.

Of the 592 that came out to vote, Martin got 461 votes. 130 ballots were cast in favorite of write-ins.
