Tajik hero Dilshod Nazarov wins hammer throw

Gold: Dilshod Nazarov (TJK)
Silver: Ivan Tsikhan (BLR)
Bronze: Wojciech Nowicki (POL)

Dilshod Nazarov of Tajikistan secured his country’s first medal of the 2016 Olympic Games, a gold in the men’s hammer throw.

In his fifth of six throws, Nazarov launched the 16-pound ball and chain 78.68 meters, nearly a full meter farther than the next farthest throw.

That next farthest throw came from Ivan Tsikhan of Belarus in his fifth throw as well.

Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki captured bronze in dramatic fashion. After fouling on his fourth and fifth throws, he delivered a legal throw of 77.73m, third-best of the night.

Nowicki’s final throw knocked Mexico’s Diego Del Real out of the medal positions into fourth place.

It is the second hammer throw medal of these Games for Poland, as Anita Wlodarczyk won gold in the women’s competition four days ago, breaking the world record.
