Marielena Balouris joined the WAVY team in August 2016 and is thrilled to be part of the Hampton Roads community.
Marielena was born and raised in Pittsburgh. In fifth grade, her mom predicted that she would get into television news. She didn’t necessarily agree, but, as she’s learned, Mom is always right.
Marielena traveled across the state to attend Penn State University where she earned degrees in broadcast journalism and political science. Her career began at WTAJ-TV, the CBS affiliate in Central Pennsylvania, which covers Altoona, Johnstown, State College and the surrounding areas. At WTAJ, Marielena worked as a multimedia journalist, anchor and producer. She covered a wide variety of stories, including the 24-hour shutdown of the PA Turnpike and the PA Attorney General’s investigation of sexual assault within the Altoona-Johnstown Catholic Diocese.
While at Penn State, Marielena was involved in a number of on-campus activities, including The Centre County Report, the College of Communication’s award-winning student newscast. She also was a campus tour guide, sang in one of the School of Music’s choirs, and danced in Penn State’s 46-hour dance marathon, also known as THON. After college, Marielena spent a summer as a staff member at Ionian Village, a Greek Orthodox summer camp located in Greece.
Marielena is looking forward to getting to know the people of Hampton Roads and sharing their stories. Feel free to get in touch!
