3-hour standoff in Smithfield ends without incident

SMITHFIELD, VA. (WAVY)- The Smithfield Police Department along with assistance from the Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office, the Virginia State Police, and the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad ended a 3-hour standoff Thursday evening.

Police say 55-year old John Lee was taken into custody without incident after holding up in a home located in the 300 block of Hunter Way.

Smithfield Police Department received a call at approximately 7:00 p.m. Thursday domestic disturbance in the 300 block of Hunter Way. When officers arrived on scene they met the family who was leaving the residence. That’s when police say Lee displayed a firearm and retreated back into the home. An officer got the family to safety and set up a perimeter around the home.

The Smithfield PD TACT Team made entry into the residence at approximately 11:00 p.m. and made contact with Lee, who was on the stairs.

Lee is currently being treated for mental health issues and charges are pending.
