Police search Chesapeake home where detective and son were killed

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — 10 On Your Side has obtained a search warrant executed at a home in the Hickory area of Chesapeake, where police say a man fatally shot his father and brother.

According to police, 20-year-old Zachary Toothman shot and killed his father, Michael, a Chesapeake police detective, and his 17-year-old brother, Matthew. Toothman’s mother was injured in the shooting.

The search warrant says investigators found three handguns, four bullets, five shells and one unfired cartridge. They also collected DNA evidence and clumps of hair, along with cell phones and computers.

Police have charged Zachary Toothman with six felony charges including attempted first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree murder and three counts use of a fire in commission of a felony in connection with the triple shooting.

Zachary Toothman’s grandparents told 10 On Your Side although he had been a top student at Hickory High, he was on academic probation at Virginia Tech. The university said Zachary Toothman was not officially enrolled for the fall semester.
