NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Crews are working a house fire in the 5500 block of Brookville Road.

Dispatchers say they received a call about the fire at 4:14 p.m. Firefighters arrived on scene to find smoke coming from the two-story home. The fire was found inside the walls of the utility room on the first floor. Firefighters began extinguishing the blaze, searched the home and checked the second story of the home to see if the fire had spread. More fire was found in the walls of the second floor. Crews had the power cut off and continued to open up walls to extinguish the fire.

The resident was home at the time, saw smoke while he was repairing a drain pipe in his utility room, got out of the house and called 911. He was not injured.

Though the fire was contained to where it started, smoke spread throughout the house. The man will be displaced due to the damage.

The fire is under investigation and it appears to be accidental in nature, fire officials say.
