VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — K-9 officers with the Virginia Beach Police Department are receiving protective ballistic vests Wednesday afternoon.

Local nonprofit Spikes K9 Fund and the Virginia Beach Police Foundation donated the money for the vests. Officers in Virginia Beach received protective vests in May, thanks in part to a donation from CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

Cooper donated funds to Spike’s after K-9 Krijger was shot and killed during a January standoff.

Officers say the Police K-9’s and team members will get the vests in a special presentation later this afternoon.
