China places first and second in women’s 10m prelim; both Americans advance

China Olympic Diving Si Yajia

China did was China does at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Center Wednesday in Rio as 17-year-old Si Yajie and 15-year-old Ren Qian placed first and second in the women’s individual 10m platform preliminary.

Si landed atop the field with a consistent 397.45-point program. Ren was right behind her with a total of 385.80.

Both Americans advanced to the semifinal. Jessica Parratto placed third with 346.80 points, posting her highest-scoring dive in the final round with a 78.40-point back 2.5 pike with 1.5 twists. And Katrina Young placed 12th with 313.85 points.

Reigning World champion Kim Kuk-hyang of North Korea made a shocking early exit. She was right on the bubble in 17th place going into her fourth-round dive, when she miscalculated and over rotated before entry, resulting in a huge splash and a 26.10-point attempt. She scored 397.05 points in five dives at the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia, but managed 263.20 points in the Rio Olympics on Wednesday.

China has taken gold in the women’s individual 10m platform at each of the past two Olympic Games, but this year’s competitors — aged 15 and 17 — are both making their Olympic debut.
