Chicken tests positive for EEE in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Health officials say a sentinel chicken in near Wards Corner in Norfolk has tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).

This is the first time a sentinel chicken has tested positive for EEE in Norfolk this year. Officials say mosquito surveillance and control efforts as a result of the test.

More EEE activity detected in several Suffolk neighborhoods

Officials say Norfolk residents, including those over the age of 50, should take action to protect themselves from mosquito-borne illnesses including West Nile Virus and EEE.

Two horses in Suffolk have tested positive for EEE in 2016.
