Fishing boat worker passes out from heat exhaustion

REEDVILLE, Va. (WAVY) — A crew member on a commercial fishing boat fell unconscious Monday morning due to heat exhaustion.

Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads says they received a distress alert at 10:30 a.m. for a person suffering heat exhaustion three nautical miles from Smith Island, off of Cape Charles.

The Coast Guard launched a patrol boat to check on the crew member. The person had regained consciousness by the time Coast Guard crews arrived on scene.

The person did not go to the hospital and stayed on the fishing boat because they had enough fluids and was allowed to remain in the air conditioned part of the boat.
