JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. (WAVY) – Part of the Langley Air Force Base airfield will be closed for about a week in August as crews begin work on a refurbishing project at the western end of the runway.
The airfield will close at 7 p.m. August 12 and is scheduled to reopen at 11 a.m. August 17. The 10,000 foot runway dates back to the founding of the airfield 100 years ago.
The 1st Fighter Wing’s F-22 training mission is expected to remain at its current operational level. There will be a safety buffer zone of about 1,000 feet between construction and flight operations.
Construction will continue into December, according to Langley officials.
