Shakur Deandre Stephenson was taken into custody just before 6 p.m. at an apartment complex in the east end of Henrico County.

Stephenson was wanted on one charge of first degree murder and five charges of attempted first degree murder.

At 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 3, police responded to the Murphy Express on Highway 13 in Ahoskie and found that a store clerk had been shot. She was taken to the hospital and later died from her injuries.

Police identified the clerk as 23-year-old Lakiesha Sutton.

Police said that Stephenson shot at six people and hit three of them, including Sutton. The two other people shot, both men, suffered non life-threatening injuries.

Sutton’s mother, Wanda Lee, said she found out about her daughter’s death when Sutton didn’t answer the phone early on the morning of August 3. She said Sutton was not scheduled to work at the gas station that day, but agreed to the shift, and went outside once a fight started there.

“She was the sweetest girl. Anybody that she could help, she would help them. I don’t think that she ever told anybody, ‘No.'”

Now her daughter, who had a young son of her own, will go on to help others, as an organ donor.

“She wanted to save lives. That makes me feel good,” Lee said.

Lee said the family knows the suspect.

“I know tomorrow’s not promised to nobody, but knowing that your child got shot by somebody and killed by somebody that you know, that’s hurting,” Lee said.

Sutton’s father, Raymond Lee, thanked the community for its support.

“She will truly be missed and not forgotten.”

Fitzhugh noted that Stephenson is still in Virginia at the moment, and will face charges in the shooting once he is extradited back to North Carolina.
