HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A Hampton man is facing charges, including murder, in the January homicide of a 5-month-old boy.

Police say emergency crews were called to a home on Lakeshore Drive the afternoon of Jan. 27 for a report of a 5-month-old who was unresponsive.

The child, Chandler Berry, was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead from his injuries.

23-year-old Montreaz Berry has been arrested and charged with murder and abuse and neglect of children in connection with the incident.

Police say an investigation shows that Montreaz Berry physically assaulted Chandler Berry on Jan. 27. The medical examiner says the baby died from blunt force head injuries.

They were reportedly the only two people at home during the incident.

Marie Warren has lived at the Abbington at Hampton Center Apartments for 20 years. She told 10 On Your Side’s Joe Fisher that this kind of thing isn’t normal for the neighborhood.

“I’m thinking how in the world did this happen here,” Warren said. “That says a lot about that parent. That is shocking to know that he did that. How do you do that to you own child?”

Neighbors are shocked by the allegations.

“There has to be something else under the surface that we do not know about that caused him to do that,” Warren said.
