PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A 15-year-old boy was shot on Edwards Street, near 6th Street, in Portsmouth overnight.
According to police, someone shot the juvenile in the lower leg around early Wednesday morning.
Officers were called to the area shortly after 1 a.m. for a call about a 15-year-old who had been shot.
“I just heard four gunshots. And then I just heard people screaming and it kind of freaked me out. I just heard somebody say, ‘call 911,’ so I called. And it was just so upsetting,” said one neighbor, who only wanted to be identified as Lisa. “I just hope that whatever happened, I hope he’s okay.”
According to Detective Misty Holley with the Portsmouth Police Department, the victim may have been outside with friends and tried to run from gunfire when he was hit.
“A gray or silver vehicle pulls up, there’s a few shots fired in the direction where those individuals were. Those individuals fled and in the process of fleeing, one of the individuals was struck by gunfire,” Holley said.
Paramedics took him to a local hospital for treatment, where he is expected to be OK.
Investigators focused their overnight investigation on several apartments in the area. WAVY’s Rico Bush reports that it appears clothing was found on ground nearby Edwards Street.
Police say they’re looking for a silver or gray car which was seen leaving the scene shortly after the shooting. They have not released details on a suspect description or a motive for the shooting.
