Woman dies after being hit by vehicle in Currituck County

CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — A woman was fatally hit by a vehicle on Caratoke Highway at Walnut Island Boulevard Wednesday night.

North Carolina Highway Patrol says a vehicle was traveling south on U.S. 158 in Grandy near Hardee’s and 7-Eleven at about 8:03 p.m. when a pedestrian darted out into the roadway. The driver hit the pedestrian.

Police identified the woman as 28-year-old Briann Nicole Dawes of Sharpsburg, North Carolina. According to police, Dawes was wearing dark clothing and it appears she was under the influence of alcohol.

Troopers are still investigating.

This is the ninth traffic fatality in Currituck this year. This includes crashes and auto-pedestrian accidents.
