Matt Kelchner’s 16th season at CNU will be his last as head coach

NEWPORT NEWS (WAVY) — Christopher Newport football coach Matt Kelchner announced on Wednesday that this will be final season as head coach of the Captains.

Kelchner has been CNU’s only head coach since it started football in 2001. He will remain with the university as an associate athletic director.

Kelchner, who made the announcement to his players at their season-opening meeting Wednesday night, has a career record of 102-57.

“I was fortunate to be given the task to lead this new football program,” said Kelchner in a school release. “Sixteen years later, I am proud of what our remarkable students, staff, colleagues and fans have accomplished in making this program so successful. I am indebted to Christopher Newport University for entrusting me with the leadership of our football team, but I have given a great deal of thought to this decision and it is the right time for me to make this transition in my life.”

A national search for the next Head Football Coach at Christopher Newport will begin immediately upon the conclusion of the season.

Christopher Newport opens the 2016 football season on Saturday, September 3rd , vs. Kean University at POMOCO Stadium. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
