Father of fallen Muslim soldier being urged to run for office in Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — He captured the attention of millions at the Democratic National Convention.

“Have you even read the united states constitution? I will gladly lend you my copy,” Charlottesville resident Khizr Khan said at the DNC.

Video of Khan’s speech went viral as he took on Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump.

“You have sacrificed nothing and no one,” Khan said.

The father of fallen Muslim soldier Captain Humayn Khan is now the center of a grassroots effort to get the darling of the DNC to run for office. The fundraising page was started by Army veteran Tom Keefe and has raised more than $13,000 so far.

On the page Keefe states:

“We need more candidates like Khizr Khan, not Donald Trump, to run for office in America. Mr. Khan is someone who has achieved the American dream and made the ultimate sacrifice for this country.”

It’s an effort to get Khan to run against Delegate Rob Bell in the state’s 58th district.

Supporters have voiced their endorsements on the page with comments such as, “Virginia’s house of delegates desperately needs fresh perspectives regarding how to keep our nation safe and free,” and, “I endorse Khizr Khan because he has shown grace, passion, and patriotism in defense of his son, and of our nation’s service members.”

Pledges will only be charged if Khan decides to run. At this point, there is no indication whether he plans to do so. Meanwhile, we reached out to Delegate Bell who declined to comment.
