NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A homicide investigation is underway in Norfolk after a man was found lying on the ground in Lafayette Park Monday morning.

Officers were called to the scene in the 3500 block of Granby Street, near the Virginia Zoological Park, around 9:20 a.m. for a man found unconscious and not breathing.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. The Medical Examiner’s Office will be determining his cause of death.

Family and friends of the man gathered at the scene for hours, and spoke with 10 On Your Side.

Carolynn Wilkins says the man was her uncle. “We know he was shot while he was lying down, sleeping. Somebody cowardly, regardless of what happened, chose this opportunity to take his life and they didn’t think twice about it,” said Wilkins. “He, for the most part, lives home-to-home. This isn’t about who he is, this is more about how everyone has no value for life-like they should.”

Another niece, Alexis Dawkins, says her uncle was a very generous man. “I just want justice for my uncle. I want everyone to find out what happened to him. For the ones who did know Hollywood, he was a good person,” said Dawkins.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

10 On Your Side will continue to gather the latest details on this developing investigation.
