NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The inbound gates at Naval Station Norfolk were closed for about an hour Monday afternoon after a sailor tried to drive through Gate 2 without his credentials.
Kelly Wirfel, spokesperson for Naval Station Norfolk, told 10 On Your Side that a sailor drove through the gates without showing proper credentials and kept going. He was apprehended shortly after going through the gates.
Wirfel said the sailor was assigned to a ship at the base and didn’t have his credentials on him at the time.
The gates were closed from 2:40 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Only one lane was open at each gate for outbound traffic. All gates are now back open.
Wirfel said it is standard procedure for inbound traffic to be shut down during situations such as this one.
