Man shot early Friday morning near ODU dies from his injuries

Police are asking for help to identify a person of interest in connection to the shooting

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man shot close to Old Dominion University early Friday morning has died from his injuries, Norfolk police say.

Shortly before 2:25 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of West 49th Street and Hampton Boulevard for a report of a person shot. When police arrived on scene, they found 24-year-old Dante Lewis, of Chicago, inside a vehicle suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Lewis was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He died Saturday evening, surrounded by his family, police say.

Police have not released any suspect information at this time. However, they are asking for help to identify a person of interest in connection to the shooting.

At this time, there are no active warrants on file for the man. Police say they simply want to talk to him about the shooting because detectives believe he may have some information.
