NEW YORK (WRIC) — A Northern Virginia man who stepped on an explosive device in New York’s Central Park last week has lost part of his leg, police have said.

Family members of Conner Golden say doctors amputated the 18-year-old’s lower leg and foot on Friday.

Golden’s family thanked everyone who helped their son at the time of the accident, including paramedics.

Police now believe that Golden stepped on a home-made firework that had been left in the park.

The blast on the east side of the Manhattan park Sunday could be heard for blocks, leaving some with the belief that it was part of a July Fourth celebration.
