Black Lives Matter protesters gather in Chesapeake, Suffolk

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — Black Lives Matter protesters gathered Monday on Greenbriar Parkway in Chesapeake.

Several WAVY viewers shared photos of the demonstration. One viewer said the protesters were gathered in the median at the intersection of Jarman Road and Greenbriar Parkway.

Another viewer said police were on scene and that officers could be seen coming out to the median.

Dispatchers told WAVY.com that police were in the area where viewers claimed the protest was happening, but would not confirm why police were on scene.

In Suffolk, a demonstration took place on Main Street Monday evening. It started at Baron’s Pub at 7 p.m.

Photos from the event showed what appeared to be a large number of protesters marching.

Dispatchers say a protest in Smithfield Monday evening was shut down by authorities. Another rally took place at a 7-Eleven in Smithfield around 10 p.m.

The demonstrations come just one day after protesters shut down and stopped traffic on Interstate 264 near the Downtown Tunnel in Portsmouth.
