VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A death investigation is underway in Virginia Beach after officials recovered a body from a lake Monday morning.

Police say they received a report of a missing person in the 2300 block of Nottoway Lane in the Sherwood Lakes subdivision at 6:10 a.m. Monday.

At 9:40 a.m., the Virginia Beach Marine Patrol Dive team recovered a man’s body from a lake in the 2700 block of Gaston Lane, about 15 to 20 feet off the shoreline, submerged in about four to six feet of water.

Police spokesperson Linda Kuehn identified the victim as 34-year-old Inderdeep Singh of Virginia Beach.

A joint search effort between fire and rescue crews, police marine patrol and EMS personnel was undertaken Monday morning for a possible drowning of the reported missing person.

Singh’s cousin told 10 On Your Side the family noticed him missing that morning, and called police.

They never expected police to pull Singh’s body from the water, because he couldn’t swim and shouldn’t have been in the lake, according to the cousin.

People who live in the neighborhood say the water is shallow for about 10 feet, but then drops off sharply. Investigators say they found Singh’s body about 15 to 20 feet offshore, in water four to six feet deep.

Although several neighbors say they will continue swimming in the lake, one woman said she never has, and never will.

“I think it’s unsafe,” said Chelsee McGrath. “You can swim all the way out into the lake and get tired, and nobody’s there to help you if you do get tired.”

Police said there is no indication of foul play in this case. The death investigation is being led by Virginia Beach’s homicide squad.
