HERTFORD, N.C. (WAVY) — The Coast Guard is searching the Albemarle Sound near Hertford for a missing man.

At about 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, Coast Guard crews were alerted that a man was missing near the entrance to the Yeopim River in the sound.

Watchstanders in the Sector North Carolina Command Center in Wilmington issued an urgent marine information broadcast right away and began to coordinate search and rescue efforts.

A 29-foot Response Boat-Small crew from Station Elizabeth City launched at about 5:30 p.m., and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City launched around 6:15 p.m. Both crews arrived on the scene by 7:05 p.m. and are currently searching along with crews from North Carolina Wildlife and Perquimans County Marine Rescue.

A North Carolina Wildlife crew had arrived on scene before the Coast Guard and pulled one man from the water, who reported seeing the missing man clinging to a crab buoy close to the entrance of the Yeopim River. The rescued man reported that he and the missing man went for a swim from the back of a pontoon, but weren’t able to get back on the boat before it drifted away.
