When he was returned to his holding cell, authorities say Jefferson managed to dismantle the safety pin in on the sprinkler head, which was on the ceiling of the holding cell. That caused the courtroom sprinkler and alarm systems to go off.

The entire courthouse was evacuated shortly after 1 p.m.

The sheriff’s office is working with a city restoration crew to try to salvage the carpet and get an estimate on the damages.

Jefferson is now facing additional charges. He was originally faces charges for strangulation, simple assault, larceny, grand larceny, obstruction of justice, hit and run, failure to report and resisting arrest.
