Home security video captures hit-and-run crash

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Neighbors have contacted 10 On Your Side after they saw a driver destroy their mailboxes and flee the scene.

Dispatchers confirm officers responded to the 3000 block of Stumpy Lake Lane Friday evening for a hit-and-run accident. Security video shows a dark Jeep go up a driveway around 8:45 p.m. The driver then reverses and hits some hedges and mailboxes.

Less than half-an-hour prior to the crash, kids in the neighborhood had been playing basketball in the same area.

“I’m glad the kids were already inside, because you just never know what it could have been if they were out here,” said Elizabeth Williams, whose two daughters were playing outside that night. “I mean, if he didn’t see the mailboxes, would he have the kids? I don’t know.”

Williams said she hopes the driver gets caught, and that this story serves as a reminder to other drivers.

“The fact that it’s summertime is even more concerning, you know kids could possibly be outside,” she said. “Be more careful, be aware. Slow down. That’s our biggest thing on this street, is just for people to slow down. You’re in a neighborhood.”

Virginia Beach police have not said whether they’ve found the driver.
