Icon returned to Wichita church after being stolen

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A Wichita church has one of its century-old icons back thanks to a local antique dealer.

Last week Saturday, the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was taken from the altar in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

In a Facebook post, the church says the icon was returned on Sunday.

“I received a call late yesterday afternoon, it was from one of the antique stores here in town, downtown. They of course bought the painting or the icon on Wednesday. It had been brought either by whoever took it or an accomplice of whomever took it. They saw the media coverage and called right away late Sunday afternoon,” said St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Pastoral Assistant Mike McDaneld.

Wichita police have launched an investigation into the theft.
