VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A man will serve two months behind bars for his part in the death of a cat in Virginia Beach.

26-year-old Justin Page and his roommate, 23-year-old Cody Craig Gerarden, were arrested and charged last year after a domesticated cat, named Pirate, was suffocated to death.

Page pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges including animal cruelty and disposal of a companion animal on public property. The Commonwealth amended his two felony charges to misdemeanors because of his lesser involvement in the crime. He was sentenced to a total of 24 months with 22 months suspended for both charges, leaving two months left to serve.

Page reports to jail on June 21.

Page must also not own companion animals and must be on good behavior for two years.

Gerarden pleaded no contest to felony animal cruelty in March. He was sentenced to five years in prison with all but three years and six months suspended. Gerarden will serve the remaining one year and six months of the sentence.
