PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A Portsmouth man pleaded guilty to second degree murder Monday in a man’s October 2015 death.

49-year-old Wayne McClellan was sentenced to 40 years in prison with 23 suspended, leaving 17 years left to serve.

Police found the body of 53-year-old John Craig inside a bedroom closet covered with a blanket. Police say McClellan flagged officers down and told them about Craig’s body.

McClellan originally said he helped Craig commit suicide by tying his hands and putting a plastic bag over his head.
