Man arrested, charged in overnight homicide in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth Police say they have a suspect in custody in connection with an overnight homicide investigation.

Michael Coker is facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with the investigation.

Officers were called to the 3600 block of County Street around 11:20 p.m. Responding officers found a man who was suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. He has been identified as 65-year-old Idoius Copeland.

Police say the suspect, Coker, was immediately identified and taken into custody. Detectives say Coker and the man had had a verbal argument earlier on Sunday.

Coker is currently being held at Portsmouth City Jail. Police say an investigation into the homicide is ongoing.
