FAIRFAX (WAVY) – For the second straight season, Hickory High School’s season came to an end against Atlee in the the 5A softball state championship game.
Atlee junior second baseman Casey Barrett had a solo home run in the second inning, and an RBI double in the fifth to lead the Raiders to back-to-back titles.
For the Hawks (22-3), their best chances came in the first and sixth innings. With no score in the first, Hickory advanced runners to second and third thanks to a bunt. The next batter, however, head coach Ryan Wieck opted to bunt again with one out and runners in scoring position. Atlee managed to hold the runners, and come away unscathed.
The Hawks also stranded two base runners in the sixth.
