SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – A woman is in custody after allegedly crashing a stolen San Francisco Fire Department ambulance off I-80 at Treasure Island Tuesday morning.
The suspect, who was uninjured as a result of the crash, had led officers on a brief pursuit starting near San Francisco’s Union Square and finishing on Treasure Island.
The vehicle was taken as medical personnel were responding to a medical emergency at the Ambassador Hotel at 55 Mason Street around 8 a.m., according to fire officials and police.
Before police located the ambulance, residents reported seeing the vehicle driving on sidewalks through San Francisco. It even hit a parked car at 8th and Harrison Street.
Using GPS, police found the suspect driving the stolen ambulance eastbound across the Bay Bridge.
Police began to pursue the vehicle on the bridge. The suspect tried to get off at the Treasure Island off-ramp, lost control of the ambulance and crashed.
The ambulance caught fire and firefighters had to extinguish the flames.
A woman was taken into custody. She was not injured in the crash.
The eastbound Treasure Island off-ramp was closed as police investigated the incident. It has been reopened.
