CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Police say someone shot and killed a 55-year-old man on Stowe Street, just off Atlantic Avenue, in the Broad Lawn Park community Tuesday night.

The man was identified by police Wednesday as 55-year-old Rickie Williams.

At 9:37 p.m., officers responded to the scene for a report of shots fired. Once officers arrived, they found a man dead from what appears to be gunshot injuries.

Family members of the victim tell 10 On Your Side’s Liz Kilmer that Williams is a father and was going to turn 56 Wednesday. The family also said that someone shot at his home last week.

Friends of the victim told 10 On Your Side’s Brandi Cummings on Wednesday that Williams was in the Broadlawn Park Community often. One friend said his girlfriend lived there, and that the shooting happened in front of her apartment.

A growing memorial with balloons, flowers and stuffed animals marks the spot where Williams lost his life.

“He was the nicest, sweetest man I ever met,” Tiffany Hines said.

Williams was nicknamed “Slop.” He was known for his kind heart and generosity.

“He was real sweet. Whatever he could do to help you. He helped a lot of people. He gave you whatever he could give you,” Antionette Williams said.

There are no descriptions of the suspect or the vehicle that may have been involved available at this time.

Police are still investigating the shooting.
