Police find children, 3 and 6, alone at Newport News home

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Police have obtained warrants for a woman after two young children were found alone at a Newport News home.

Holly McPherson with Newport News Police says at 10:44 a.m. on Wednesday, officers were dispatched to 800 block of 35th  Street to serve an active warrant out of Chesterfield to the 26-year-old woman who lived there. The warrant was a Capias failure to appear.

After several minutes at the door, the only response officers got was a child’s voice. After several minutes, an adult female voice was heard. The individual did not answer the door and indicated the homeowner wasn’t home.

At a later point in the investigation, a relative of the homeowner showed up to the scene and allowed police inside the residence. Police found two young girls, a 3-year-old and a 6-year-old, alone in an upstairs bedroom. No adult was found in the home, police say.

The children were unharmed. Child Protective Services was notified and the children were released to the custody of the relative who let police inside the home.

Warrants were obtained for the 26-year-old resident for two counts of child neglect.

Police are still investigating.
