VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office says a suspicious envelope found at the Virginia Beach courthouse is not a threatening substance.
Around 4 p.m. Friday, the Virginia Beach Fire Department responded to the courthouse for a report of a suspicious substance found inside an envelope that was mailed to the courthouse. The building was immediately evacuated and the HVAC system was shut down to prevent the substance from spreading.
A hazardous materials team conducted field tests on the substance, which came back negative for any hazardous material.
Those who came into contact with the envelope were evaluated and released without injury. Medics were on scene as a precaution.
The scene has now cleared.
The fire department and the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office Criminal Intelligence Unit are still investigating.
