NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Police have made an arrest in the shooting death of a 41-year-old Norfolk man.
Shelton Givens is accused of killing Kenneth Britt outside of the victim’s Huntersville home on Sunday afternoon. Police got the call to Johnson Avenue around 2:40 p.m.
Britt’s fiance, Pamela Johnson, heard the gunshots from inside the house. As she tried to call 911, someone in the neighborhood informed her that Britt had been hit.
“I lost it and ran downstairs, that’s when I saw him on the ground… The paramedics had to literally pull me off of him,” Johnson said.
Britt was pronounced dead at the scene.
“He didn’t deserve that. That was cold-blooded murder,” said Geneva Britt, the victim’s mother.
10 On Your Side cameras captured Givens being taken into custody. Johnson told 10 On Your Side she saw the suspect before police arrived.
“I saw him standing out there, holding a gun. He wasn’t even running.”
While loved ones are relieved by the arrest, they don’t feel any closure. They believe others may have also been involved in the shooting death.
“There’s more to the story,” Johnson said. “I’m not gonna be happy until that is resolved.”
“I hope, I want justice to be done, I pray to my God almighty to let the truth be told,” the victim’s mother said.
Loved ones want Britt to be remembered for his loving spirit, and for stepping in as a father figure to Johnson’s children.
“He loved them children,” his mother told 10 On Your Side. “He loved to be happy, loved to have fun, loved enjoying himself. He loved life.”
“He was a great person. He had a good heart, and if you asked him to help you, he would, without a doubt,” Johnson said.
The victim had reportedly proposed to her just days before the shooting.
“And he’s gone.”
Givens is charged with second degree murder and use of a firearm. According to court records, Givens is due back in court July 12.
