HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — The Red Cross has issued steps you should take now to be prepared for hurricane season.

Hurricane season starts June 1 and runs through November 30.

Hurricanes cause problems for people in coastal areas and can also cause damage hundreds of miles inland.

“These are dangerous storms that can affect people living here in Virginia,” said Reginald E. Gordon, CEO for the American Red Cross Virginia Region. “It’s time to get ready now, before a storm threatens.”

In order to be prepared as much as possible, you should:

  • Build an emergency kit with a gallon of water in your household per person, per day, non-perishable food, a flashlight, battery-powered radio, emergency contact information and more. Click here to find a full list of items you should have in your emergency kit.
  • Talk to those in your household and create an evacuation plan. Practice the plan to minimize confusion and fear during an actual event.
  • Be informed. Learn about your community’s hurricane response plan. Plan routes to local shelters, register family members with special medical needs as required and make plans for pets.
  • You can also download the free Red Cross Emergency App, where you can choose up to 35 different severe weather and emergency alerts for your mobile device. Click here to learn more.

If you already have a disaster kit, now is the time to make sure the food and water is still okay to consume and important documents are all up to date. If you already have an emergency plan, review it with family members so everyone knows what to do if needed.
