VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach City Public Schools named the new principal of Landstown High School Monday.
Dr. Cheryl Askew will serve as the school’s new principal beginning July 1.
Askew currently serves as the principal of Ocean Lakes High School and will finish the school year there before transitioning to Landstown High over the summer.
“When the opportunity came available at Landstown, I knew working with a new, talented staff, a passionate student body as well as the Governor’s STEM and Technology Academy would be the ideal fit for me,” Dr. Askew said in a news release.
Askew began her career in education as a teacher in Pennsylvania before joining VBCPS, where she has been for 31 years. After 20 years in the classroom, Askew transitioned into administration. She spent three years as an assistant principal at Ocean Lakes before becoming principal in 2005.
Acting Principal of Landstown High School, Jerry Deviney, will stay through the end of the school year.
Earlier this month, it was announced that former Landstown High Principal Dr. Brian Matney was reassigned to the Office of Research and Evaluation as a program evaluation specialist. The school system told 10 On Your Side that the decision to reassign Matney came after an investigation found a significant number of concerns and complaints about Matney’s leadership.
