RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) – It was a record-breaking weekend in the fight against cancer, and a local woman is leading the charge.
Erin Lee McFarland is the Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s Woman of the Year in Virginia. She earned that honor this past weekend in Richmond.
Erin is a physician assistant at the Orthopaedic & Spine Center in Newport News, and she raised $104,000 for blood cancer research. The Virginia Chapter of LLS raised a record $476,000 during this event.
Each year, in communities across the country, candidates engage in a ten-week competition to earn The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Man & Woman of the Year” titles by raising funds for blood cancer research.
The candidates compete in honor of children who are local blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year. Nationally in 2015, LLS’s Man & Woman of the Year campaign raised more than $32.5 million for research and patient services.
10 On Your Side will host the Light the Night Walk for LLS at MacArthur Center in Norfolk October 22. Click here to register.
