NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The Navy awarded Huntington Ingalls Industries with a $152 million contract Monday for advance planning for the construction of the Enterprise aircraft carrier.
The work includes engineering, design, planning and procurement of long-lead-time material and will be performed at the company’s Newport News Shipbuilding division.
Construction on the Enterprise is slated to begin in 2018. Delivery to the Navy is expected in 2027. The new Enterprise will eventually replace the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower when the aircraft carrier enters the fleet.
