NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A world-class runner and Old Dominion University researcher has died. Mel Williams was a founder of the Tidewater Striders.
The Norfolk resident touched many as a mentor, scholar and athlete. He researched the effects of caffeine, blood doping and more. Up until recently, he had competed in every Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC. He also won his age group at the Boston Marathon three times. Local runners affectionately know him as “The Legend.”
Williams was 78-years-old.
