COMO, N.C. (WAVY) — Authorities have charged 22-year-old DeAngelo Smallwood in connection with the Dec. 5 shooting death of a Chowan University student.

DaMarco Duncan, 21, was shot in the back while he was trying to run from the scene of several fights, which had erupted at the Shandy Shores Lakeside Lounge last December.

Duncan’s friends tried to drive him to the hospital, and were pulled over by deputies so that they could give him first aid. Duncan was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

In a news conference Friday afternoon, Sheriff Juan Vaughan said warrants were issued for Smallwood following a lengthy investigation.

Vaughan says Smallwood is being held on a $750,000 secured bond on unrelated charges including attempted first-degree murder, felony conspiracy and shooting into an occupied dwelling.

Vaughan also confirmed on Friday that Smallwood is not a Chowan University student.

“Although it was a sad occasion, this is a great day to be able to know we have put somebody behind bars for it, and I pray that we get a conviction out of it,” Vaughan said.

The investigation is still ongoing, and Vaughan noted that there could be other arrests in connection with the Dec. 5, 2015 incident.
